Wahiba Sands & Wadi Bani Khalid Day Trip

Golden desert dunes, turquoise oasis pools and a ghost town of mud-brick mansions — Oman’s contrasts in a single day.

Few day trips capture Oman’s range of landscapes quite like this one. In a single day, you’ll travel from the honeycomb ruins of a historic merchant town to the turquoise pools of a mountain oasis, and finally into the rolling red dunes of the Wahiba Sands — one of the most accessible true deserts in the Arabian Peninsula.

The day begins in Ibra, where the abandoned old quarter of Al Minzifah reveals the two- and three-storey mud-brick mansions of wealthy 18th-century merchant families. From there, you’ll continue to Wadi Bani Khalid, where spring-fed turquoise pools cut through the Eastern Hajar Mountains — a perfect spot to cool off with a swim. The final stretch takes you by 4×4 into the Wahiba Sands, home to the Bedouin Al Wahiba tribe, where you’ll ride a camel across the dunes, visit a Bedouin family for tea and stories, and watch the sunset turn the sand deep orange and copper.

💡 How it works: Tell us your travel date and group size – we’ll arrange your private day trip to Wahiba Sands and Wadi Bani Khalid, including hotel pick-up, an experienced 4×4 driver-guide and all three stops along the way.

Practical Info

  • Duration: Full day (approx. 12–13 hours incl. hotel pick-up/drop-off in Muscat; an early start is recommended)

  • Distance from Muscat: About 2–2.5 hours’ drive to Ibra and Wahiba Sands, plus further driving between stops within the region

  • Difficulty: Moderate — some walking on uneven ground at Ibra and Wadi Bani Khalid, optional swimming, and a bumpy 4×4 ride across the dunes

  • Best time to visit: October to April; desert temperatures can be extreme in summer (May–September), so this tour is best avoided during those months

  • What to bring: Swimwear for Wadi Bani Khalid, modest clothing for the Bedouin family visit and Ibra, comfortable shoes, a light jacket for the cooler desert evening, sun protection, camera

  • Group size: Ideal for small groups of 2–7 travelers, private or shared basis available
