North Vietnam – Where the Mountains Meet the Sea

Limestone islands, terraced mountains, and a thousand-year-old capital in between.

North Vietnam anchors the country’s history and its most dramatic landscapes. Hanoi’s Old Quarter and centuries-old alleyways, Halong Bay’s limestone islands, Sapa’s terraced mountains and Ninh Binh’s river caves – this region rewards travellers who want culture and scenery in a single trip.

💡 How it works: You fill in our short interest form – we plan your complete North Vietnam itinerary, from flights and accommodation to every tour, transfer and local guide.

Hanoi

Vietnam’s capital has kept its Old Quarter intact for a thousand years – narrow streets named after the guilds that once traded there, motorbikes weaving around sidewalk coffee stalls, and French colonial villas tucked behind banyan trees. It’s a city built for wandering on foot.

  • Old Quarter – 36 streets, each historically named after a single trade or craft

  • Hoan Kiem Lake – the city’s calm centre, with the red Huc Bridge leading to Ngoc Son Temple

  • Temple of Literature – Vietnam’s first national university, founded in 1070

  • Street food culture – bún chả, egg coffee, and pho served on tiny plastic stools since sunrise

Halong Bay

Nearly 2,000 limestone islands rise straight out of emerald water in Halong Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994. Most visitors experience it from an overnight cruise junk, drifting between karst towers, hidden lagoons and floating fishing villages.

  • Overnight cruisejunk boats with cabins, sunset viewing decks and kayaking stops

  • Sung Sot Cave – one of the bay’s largest cave systems, with cathedral-like chambers

  • Ti Top Island – a short climb for a panoramic viewpoint over the karst formations

  • Cat Ba Island – the bay’s largest island, with national park hiking and quieter beaches

Other North Vietnam Destinations

Sapa – High in the mountains near the Chinese border, Sapa’s terraced rice fields unfold across valleys shared by Hmong, Dao and Tay communities. Trekking routes wind through villages where farming methods have barely changed in generations, with Fansipan – Vietnam’s highest peak – rising above it all.

Ninh Binh – Often called “Halong Bay on land,” Ninh Binh’s Trang An landscape complex combines limestone karsts with rice paddies and slow river journeys by rowing boat. Its caves, temples and the ancient capital of Hoa Lu make it an easy day trip from Hanoi.
