Central Vietnam – Lantern Light and Imperial History

A UNESCO-listed trading port, a royal capital on the Perfume River, and a coastline in between.

Central Vietnam is where the country’s imperial and merchant history is best preserved. Hoi An’s lantern-lit Ancient Town, Hue’s Nguyen-dynasty Citadel on the Perfume River, and Da Nang’s beaches and mountain bridges in between – this region rewards travellers who want heritage without giving up the coast.

💡 How it works: You fill in our short interest form – we plan your complete Central Vietnam itinerary, from flights and accommodation to every tour, transfer and local guide.

Hoi An

A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, Hoi An’s Ancient Town has kept its 15th-to-19th-century trading-port character almost entirely intact. Silk lanterns light the streets after dark, tailors stitch made-to-measure clothing overnight, and the Thu Bon River drifts past merchant houses that once traded with Chinese, Japanese and European ships.

  • Ancient Town – over 1,100 historic timber-frame buildings, best explored on foot after sunset

  • Japanese Covered Bridge – a 17th-century pagoda-bridge and the town’s best-known landmark

  • Full Moon Lantern Festival – once a month, the Ancient Town switches off electric lights entirely

  • Tailor shops – custom clothing made to measure, often ready within 24 hours

Hue

Vietnam’s imperial capital from 1802 to 1945, Hue’s Citadel was modelled on Beijing’s Forbidden City and follows the Perfume River through walled palaces, a purple forbidden city, and royal tombs set in the surrounding hills.

  • Imperial Citadel – the Nguyen-dynasty royal enclosure, Vietnam’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site (1993)

  • Perfume River boat trip – a slow cruise linking the Citadel to the royal tombs

  • Tu Duc & Khai Dinh Tombs – two of the most elaborate royal mausoleums, each in a different architectural style

  • Thien Mu Pagoda – a seven-storey riverside pagoda and one of Vietnam’s oldest religious sites

Da Nang – Da Nang – Central Vietnam’s largest city sits between Hoi An and Hue, with wide sandy beaches, the Dragon Bridge that breathes fire on weekend evenings, and the Marble Mountains’ cave temples just outside town. In the hills above the city, the Golden Bridge at Ba Na Hills is held up by two giant stone hands, one of Vietnam’s most photographed newer landmarks.
