A: Yes, but since 25 May 2026 it's free of charge. German, Austrian and Swiss passport holders need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), which now comes at no cost for a 30-day stay with two entries. You still need to apply online in advance at eta.gov.lk – the fee waiver doesn't remove the application step itself.
A: Yes, private drivers are the standard way to explore Sri Lanka and one of the safest options available. All our routes use vetted, experienced drivers who know the roads, timing and logistics of each region, so you can relax and focus on the trip rather than navigation.
A: To comfortably combine the cultural triangle in the north-centre (Anuradhapura, Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa) with the south's beaches and hill country, we typically recommend 10 to 14 days. Shorter trips of 6 to 7 days work well if you focus on just one region.
A: Sri Lanka uses the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Cards are accepted in hotels, larger restaurants and shops in bigger towns, but cash is still essential for smaller vendors, local markets and rural areas. We recommend carrying some cash at all times during your trip.
A: It depends on which coast you're visiting, since the island has two separate monsoon seasons. The west and south coasts (Colombo, Galle, beaches) are best from December to March, while the east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) is best from May to September. The cultural triangle and hill country are pleasant nearly year-round.
A: No, tap water isn't safe to drink directly. Bottled water is inexpensive and widely available, and most hotels provide complimentary bottled water daily.
