West China – Silk Road & High Plateaus

Pandas, plateaus and the Silk Road – the most dramatic landscapes in China, and the least crowded.

West China trades China’s crowded east coast for high plateaus, ancient trade routes and the country’s most beloved animal. This is where landscapes turn dramatic and distances stretch further.

💡 How it works: You fill in our short interest form – we plan your complete West China itinerary, from flights and accommodation to every tour, transfer and local guide.

Chengdu

Sichuan’s laid-back capital moves at its own pace – slow tea houses, fiery hotpot, and the world’s most famous conservation success story living just outside the city.

  • Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding – see pandas up close in a conservation-focused setting

  • Kuanzhai Alley – historic Qing-dynasty lanes, teahouses and street food

  • Sichuan hotpot – the fiery, numbing dish that defines the region’s cuisine

  • People’s Park teahouse culture – locals playing mahjong over tea, a Chengdu institution

Dunhuang

Once a critical Silk Road oasis where East met West, Dunhuang preserves over a millennium of Buddhist art alongside some of China’s most dramatic desert scenery.

  • Buddhist cave temples – Gansu’s cliffs preserve centuries of Silk Road Buddhist art, from the Mogao Caves to Mati Temple

  • Singing Sand Dunes & Crescent Lake – towering dunes surrounding a natural desert oasis

  • Silk Road heritage – Dunhuang’s role as a crossroads of trade, religion and culture for over a thousand years

Other West China Destinations

Chongqing – A dramatic 3D mountain megacity stacked along the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, and the starting point for Yangtze Three Gorges cruises.

Yunnan – Lijiang’s cobblestoned Old Town, the mountain retreat of Shangri-La, and Dali’s lakeside charm – China’s most ethnically diverse province.

Tibet – The Himalayan plateau and the Potala Palace in Lhasa, a seasonal journey requiring altitude acclimatisation, best planned well in advance.
