North China – Imperial Capitals & the Great Wall

Imperial capitals, the Great Wall and 5,000 years of dynastic history – North China is where the country’s story begins.

North China anchors the country’s imperial identity. Beijing’s palaces and hutongs, Xi’an’s buried armies, Datong’s cave temples and Pingyao’s walled streets – this region rewards travellers who want to understand where modern China came from.

💡 How it works: You fill in our short interest form – we plan your complete North China itinerary, from flights and accommodation to every tour, transfer and local guide.

  • Forbidden City – the world’s largest palace complex, 980 buildings

  • Great Wall at Mutianyu – the most scenic and best-restored section near Beijing

  • Temple of Heaven – imperial altar for Ming and Qing dynasty prayer ceremonies

  • Hutong alleyways – traditional courtyard neighbourhoods, best explored by rickshaw or on foot

Xi'an

Once the eastern terminus of the Silk Road and capital of ancient China for over a thousand years, Xi’an holds one of the 20th century’s greatest archaeological discoveries.

  • Terracotta Army – over 8,000 life-sized clay soldiers guarding Emperor Qin Shi Huang’s tomb

  • Xi’an City Wall – the best-preserved ancient city wall in China, ridable by bicycle

  • Muslim Quarter – Hui Chinese food street, Great Mosque, night market

  • Big Wild Goose Pagoda – Tang-dynasty Buddhist pagoda
