Perched on high ground above the Samburu shrubland, this hilltop lodge overlooks its own natural waterhole and the rare “Samburu Special Five” — a quieter, less-travelled alternative to Kenya’s classic safari circuit.
Samburu Sopa Lodge sits on elevated ground inside the Samburu National Reserve, in the semi-arid north of Kenya. Unlike the river-bank camps nearby, it looks out over open shrubland toward the Mathews Range — and its cottages are arranged around a natural waterhole, so elephants and other wildlife often drink within view of the lounge or your private veranda. The architecture draws on traditional Samburu building style, reinterpreted with higher ceilings and wide verandas that catch the breeze.
Home to species found almost nowhere else on a Kenyan safari: Grevy's zebra, gerenuk, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich and Beisa oryx.
The only lodge in the reserve built directly around its own waterhole — game viewing is possible right from the lounge or your room.
A mosaic-tiled swimming pool with sunken bar, a spacious restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating, and a shaded lounge area.
Samburu's low light pollution makes for exceptional night skies — some evenings include telescope and astro-tourism sessions.
Two interconnecting, wheelchair-accessible cottages near reception — among the most accessible lodges in the whole Samburu ecosystem.
Thatched, arch-shaped cottages built using local materials, echoing traditional Samburu homestead architecture.
Fly around 50 minutes from Nairobi's Wilson Airport to the Samburu airstrip, followed by a short transfer to the lodge — or take the scenic 6-hour drive north, crossing the equator near Archer's Post.
Morning and afternoon drives through the reserve with experienced driver-guides, tracking the Samburu Special Five alongside elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs and crocodiles along the Ewaso Ng'iro River.
Guided walks around the lodge grounds and reserve introduce the region's flora, while nearly 400 recorded bird species make this a rewarding stop for birders.
Optional visits to nearby Samburu villages offer insight into the traditions of the local community, many of whom also work at the lodge.
Unwind at the pool bar or lounge as wildlife visits the waterhole below, and — on clear nights — enjoy Samburu's exceptional stargazing conditions.
Samburu sees far fewer visitors than the Masai Mara or Amboseli, which means game drives here tend to feel more private — and the wildlife you'll encounter, from Grevy's zebra to the reticulated giraffe, is genuinely rare on a standard Kenya itinerary.
The lodge's hilltop position trades river-bank immediacy for sweeping panoramic views across the reserve toward the Mathews Range, and its own waterhole means wildlife often comes to you. Combined with reliable Sopa Hotels service, spacious cottages, and the region's exceptional night skies, it's a strong base for travellers who want an authentic, less-crowded safari experience.
Combine Samburu with Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha or the Masai Mara — all bookable through our Sopa Lodges safari circuit form.
